House keeping for your Magento database
2Unless you have correctly setup a cron job to clear out your Magento database it is possible that over time your database could grow extremely large. We have encountered databases almost 1GB filled with useless logged information. Clearing these out not only saves disk space but can lead to some dramatic speed improvements as well.

Create a Left hand Navigation in Magento 1.4 1.4x for Modern theme
42This is an updated set of instructions from the previous post for 1.3x. A few things have changed with 1.4x which rendered the original information obsolete. These instruction will allow you to create a left hand vertical navigation as seen here . For more info see credits / references at the end. These instructions work with the Modern theme. You will have to adjust for other themes.

Magetno is a very powerful and flexible e-commerce platform which can allow a single installation of the platform to support multiple sites on multiple domains, sub-domain or folders.
This tutorial assumes you have a linux based Plesk server with SSH access and that each store will be on a seperate domain.

Change Check to Cheque / Money order to Postal order in Magento
4Magento is a featured packed robust e-commerce solution but it does have its bugs and failures. This is where having a host with free tech support comes in handy (plug plug). With the use of translation files Magento is able to adjust for many of the worlds languages including that most awkward.. English.. of the UK variety. The standard GB translation pack covers many things but what looks like a bug prevents a glaring problem. The term Cheque is rendered as Check.. several times.

Magento emails not sending to free email accounts eg gmail aol hotmail
2A few clients of ours have been experiencing this problem lately. Looks like some of the email services are dropping some emails if they dont like the look of them. Reading around it seems that if an email hits a number of criteria the email carrier will not simply place it in junk / spam but drops the whole email with no warning or feed back to user.

Where did all my line breaks go in product descriptions?
1If you have recently updated to Magento 1.4x you may have noticed that your descritions which were previously formatted to include line breaks suddenly show up as a single paragraph. It looks like this was done to iron out a few bugs with the new WYSIWYG features but leaves those doing it the old fashioned way in a bit of a pickle.

Fix missing images within Magento
1If you suddenly find yourself looking at place holders instead of images in Magento possibly following an upgrade or after other directory level changes you may want to reset permissions on /media.
