I have added this post due to the wide range of conflicting information that is currently on the web around this matter. We have seen people who should know better telling people that it is not possible and others just giving plain wrong explanations.


Here is the scenario:

You have a domain example.com hosted on one server. It does not matter where it is hosted so long as you have access to the DNS setting of this server. You wish to host newsub.example.com on another server.

The solution is very simple.

Create a new A record in your DNS control panel both cpanel, plesk and most others have this option. Set the subdomain to be newsub.example.com and the IP address to the server you wish to host that subdomain. See figure 1.

On the server you wish to host the subdomain on simply create a new domain as you normally would (see figure 2) SET THE DOMAIN TO BE THE FULL SUBDOMAIN.
